Carbury Ladies Footballers bring home the cup!
We were very lucky to have members of the Carbury ladies football team come in to talk with our 1st to 6th class children. They also brought in their Kildare Intermediate Championship Cup to show to the children. Karen, Jenna and Zoe shared fantastic words of wisdom with our students and they even fielded some tricky questions from our boys and girls. Many thanks for coming to visit us in Killina and we wish you all the best in your Leinster campaign.

5th and 6th Class End of Year Dramas
What a way to end the year! Well done to the boys and girls in 5th and 6th class on their amazing dramas that they performed for the whole school and their parents. These children wrote (from scratch), edited, re-edited, rehearsed and perfected their dramas and they were out of this world! Four wonderful groups performed their flawless plays and all of the hard work certainly paid off! There was seriousness, laughter, plot-thickening, conflict, jibes (our poor staff :-)) and fantastic acting/singing. Well done boys and girls! Táimid fíor-bhródúil asaibh.
End of Year Mass
We had a beautiful End of Year mass this morning. Fr. Murphy led the school in a celebration of the wonderful year that we had in Killina. Our wonderful choir, led by Ms. Dalton provided amazing music throughout the morning. Once the mass was finished Fr. Murphy blessed our sixth class boys and girls and Mr. Tyrrell shared some special words for the graduands. The boys and girls in sixth class then delivered a lovely speech where they relayed precious memories of their time in our school. They did an amazing job! Mr. Tyrrell then announced the Overall Attendance Award winner and Robyn was delighted to be the recipient.
We then moved on to the next part of our ceremony, where Elliot and Andrew did an amazing job in sharing our Discover Primary Science (STEM) award with our school community. They presented the plaque and delivered a wonderful speech. Dylan and Molly then shared the wonderful news about our GAA 5-star flag with the congregation. They also made a great speech, one that any grown up would be proud of! We really are creating a lot of future leaders in our school.
We then had to celebrate the retirement of our secretary Kathleen, who served our school with great dedication for eighteen years. Mrs. Noonan read out a beautiful speech and gifts were presented to Kathleen from the school and Parents' Association. Ms. Dalton's choir wrote an AMAZING song about Kathleen and they performed it with great enthusiasm for Kathleen. It was a very emotional but beautiful moment.
Finally, Mrs. Noonan and her Green Team took to the floor to share the great news about our school being awarded our 5th green flag. The boys and girls talked about the different biodiversity tasks that we undertook in Killina and we all went outside to raise the flag! Kathleen (our Guest of Honour) hoisted our 5th flag into the air to the sound of clapping and cheering. Everyone retreated back into the school to watch the End of Year slideshow that Mrs. Usher put together. It was a great end to another wonderful celebration in our school. Well done Killina!

Senior Tour to County Clare
3rd to 6th class students had the most amazing school tour in County Clare. It was a long day but it was so worth it. Chants of 'this was the best tour EVER' could be heard throughout the day! We met at our school at 7:15 am (yes AM!!) and departed at 7:30. Our first stop was Barack Obama plaza where the boys and girls stocked up on breakfast rolls, full Irish breakfasts, waffles etc.... The grown-ups had fruit salad obviously! From there we headed to Bunratty Castle and Folk Park. We had a fantastic morning exploring animal husbandry, butter churning, castle tours (and tales), more eating and an obligatory trip to the playground. We hopped back onto the bus at 2:30 and went on our way to the Aillwee Caves. There was plenty of singing and chatting en route!! We went to an amazing Birds of Prey exhibition and we even got to participate. We then went on a super trip deep into the caves where we learned lots about cave formation and the history of the area. We left Ballyvaughan at 6:15 to start our journey now. We stopped off in Kinnegad Plaza for more food where the children tucked into some delicious meals. We got back onto the bus and we arrived back to school for 10 PM, tired and ready for bed (that's the grown-ups). It really was a brilliant day and we were very proud of the boys and girls. Throughout the day they were complimented for their manners and behaviour! Maith sibh, a pháistí!
First and Second Class trip to Funtasia
Our first and second class boys and girls had a great day out in Funtastia, Drogheda. After an action-packed two hours of fun-filled water activities the children then enjoyed some lunch. To top off the excitement of their tour, the children went into the play area where they tired themselves out (or so the staff thought would be the case - they still had enough energy to sing on the bus the whole way from Drogheda :-) Mrs. Noonan's music lessons certainly came to fruition on this trip... Once again, well done to our students for their excellent behaviour, manners and respect that they displayed on their trip. They were a credit to our school and their families.
Infant School Tour
Our Junior and Senior Infant boys and girls had a great tour in Clonfert Pet Farm. It turned out to be a very adventurous day and the children had great fun with the animals, playing golf, playing in the playground and on the bouncy castle to mention a few. Well done to the boys and girls for the way that they represented our school. We are always very proud of the manners and respect that our students show when they are on tours.
Drumming Workshop with Ian
Our boys and girls had another amazing day when our very talented parent, Ian Brabazon did a music and drumming workshop with them. Many thanks to Ian for giving up his time and for giving the children this fantastic experience. The photos show how much fun everyone is having.
Confirmation Cake Party
Fifth and sixth class never miss out on an opportunity for a party! They've been waiting patiently for their Confirmation Cake Party and it didn't disappoint. Some beautiful baked goods were sampled by the boys and girls and they had great fun. It was a lovely way to celebrate 1) their Confirmation and 2) their excellent work so far this year. We are very proud of the boys and girls in 5th and 6th class. They are great leaders in our school.
Music composition
3rd and 4th class were learning about volcanoes in geography and about the Pompeii disaster in history. They were given the task of creating a musical piece to retell the story of Pompeii. Here are some pictures of the children at work. Video footage to follow...
First Holy Communion
Congratulations to the boys and girls in Second class who recently made their First Holy Communion. You all did an amazing job. We are very proud of each of you.
French Day
Fifth and sixth class had a fantastic French day in school last week. The sound of 'Bonjour' could be heard ringing around the school and the smell of French baguettes, blue cheese (that smell is still lingering!) and fresh croissants filled the air. Some dazzling French moustaches appeared as the day progressed and the boys and girls completed and presented their French projects to the rest of the school. A great day was had by all and the children did a super job, as always!
Emily Bronté inspired Poetry
Some recent art :-)
Write A Book Buddy Reading
To keep up the excitement of our Write-a-Book competition, the boys and girls from 3rd to 6th shared their books with the children from Junior Infants to Second class. We hope that this will inspire some of our younger generation to become authors too. It was a great way to celebrate the wonderful work that our students have done.
Write a Book
The results are in!! Congratulations to all of our students from 3rd to 6th class who participated in Write a Book this year. It was a great experience and we are extremely proud of the boys and girls for their hard work. Their books are outstanding.
Our books were sent to Kildare Education Centre for scoring. Another school in Kildare was then given the pleasure of reading our work. They then had to choose the top three in each class. Every student also received a certificate and pencil (in addition to the pride of writing their very own book).

Well done to everyone for their involvement in and support of our Easter raffle this year. The boys and girls in 5th and 6th class did a wonderful job yet again in selling tickets for the event. We are truly blessed to have such a fantastic group of children. The winners of the 'Big Raffle' hampers were James Gill, Léon O'Méara and Seán Doyle (c/o Peg Hughes). Many thanks to one of our parents (Helen Connolly) for putting together the amazing hampers this year. They really were show-stoppers and we are very thankful to Helen for her hard work. We also want to thank our Parent Association for their kind support of our raffle prizes. Our PA sponsored the hampers, top-seller prizes and class prizes. They also go above and beyond to support the children of our school. Our top sellers were Lily (5th class) and Kodie (6th). The class prize winners were Pauric (Junior Infants), Ryan (Senior Infants), Hannah (1st), Tiernan (2nd), Kaylem (3rd), John (4th), Léon (5th) and Emma (6th). Each of our winners got to bring home a lovely Easter Egg from the prize table. Well done to everyone and many thanks to all of our families for their support of the raffle. It was another great success. We want to wish all of our families a very happy Easter and we look forward to welcoming everyone back on the 29th April.
Bring 'n Buy Sale
We had a wonderful Bring ‘n Buy in our school last Friday. Well done to Ms. Dalton and the boys and girls in 5th and 6th class. They planned, promoted and delivered a fantastic fundraising event for our school. Many thanks to our parents for their contributions to the Bring ‘n Buy stalls and for all of the fantastic baking that was sent into the school. The boys and girls had an absolute ball and it was great to see them problem solving with money, calculating change/prices, interacting with their peers and developing their conversation/social skills at the event. The Bring ‘n Buy raised an amazing €844 for the school. Thanks to everyone for their support of this event.
An Damhsa Mór
What a fantastic morning we had to celebrate the end of Seachtain na Gaeilge in our school. During our Assembly we were treated to some beautiful songs as Gaeilge from all of our classes and some classes added in some beautiful traditional Irish music too. We then had some super performances from our in-house Irish dancers, Grace, Lennon and Hugh. This was a great warm-up for our "Damhsa Mór".
St. Patrick certainly blessed our school this morning. The sun shone and the weather was beautiful for our Céilí in the Yard. The whole school performed "An Damhsa Mór" to some beautiful traditional music. We then had more fun with "Rince na Deilbhe" (Statue Dance). It was a great chance for the children to practice their 1,2,3s and to celebrate our rich cultural heritage.

European country projects
The children in fifth and sixth are developing their research skills by using the Chromebooks and their class library to research a European country of their choice. They have been busy compiling projects in their scrapbooks. They are really impressive and we are very proud of their hard work. Keep it up boys and girls!
Famous Inventors
The boys and girls in third and fourth have been busy research famous inventors using our Chromebooks. After learning about inventors during Science and History lessons the children then chose an inventor that interested them. They have been working in pairs to research a factfile on a famous inventor. They are quickly improving their research, keyboard and word processing skills.
Assembly
The children love coming together for assemblies on Thursdays. It is a great chance for each class to show the learning that takes place in their rooms. We sing songs, say our prayers, tell some stories and share general news from across our school. This week the boys and girls from 3rd to 6th performed some of their songs from Peace Proms. The children from Infants performed a FULL Kenn Nesbitt poem, which was unbelievable!! 1st to 2nd never fail to amaze us and they did a super rendition of the poem 'Eletelephony'. We also gave out our birthday certificates for the month.
St. Valentine's Day Card-Making
6th Class Retreat
Our wonderful sixth class went on their pre-Confirmation retreat to the Focolare Centre in Prosperous. The boys and girls had a super day and once again made our school proud. As always they gave 100% and got the maximum benefits from their retreat day. We're delighted that you enjoyed your day.
Grassy Heads
As part of our instructional writing unit in third and fourth class, the children had to follow specific instructions in order to make 'Grassy Heads'. The children were also learning about the necessary conditions for growing seeds so hopefully we will see some smooth grassy hair on our characters within the next few weeks. Keep an eye on our blog to see the developments...
First and Second Class Dioramas
St. Brigids Crosses
The boys and girls from third to sixth had lots of fun making St. Brigid's Crosses. They are certainly harder to make than you'd think but the children did a super job. It was a lovely way to honour the Patron Saint of our County. Iarracht den scoth gach duine!
Peace Proms
After months of hard work, the big day in the RDS finally arrived. Our boys and girls did us proud and represented the school to the best of their ability. The children sang their hearts out and really enjoyed singing and dancing with a fantastic live orchestra. It was a truly wonderful day for our school community and we want to thank our families who came to support us on this very special day. Many thanks to our dedicated staff who put lots of effort into preparing the children for the show. The hard work certainly paid off!! We hope that everybody had a great time and that the memories of Peace Proms will live on for a long time. If anybody got good photos or videos, please feel free to send them onto our school email ([email protected]).
Christmas Quiz 2018
Mrs. Usher put on a fantastic quiz for the children from 1st to 6th class. Teams were made up of children from these classes and the boys and girls were tested in all areas of the curriculum, with questions mainly focusing on topics covered since the beginning of the school year. Mrs. Usher also threw in a few tricky questions to sort out the teams! It was a wonderful event and the boys and girls had a great time (and showed us how clever they are!!). Well done to the winning team who won by two points. Thanks to Mrs. Usher for organising this event for our students.

The audience laughed and laughed (and booed too!!) and their Christmas songs were a great end to the dramas. Well done to Ms. Dalton for encouraging her students to be the best that they can be. That's something that we always strive for here in Killina :-)

Along with the exciting activities that they have engaged with in their classroom, they were also blessed to visit Clogherinkoe National School to listen to Mario Corrigan and a number of other speakers who educated our students on the role of Carbury people who fought in the War. Such a rich learning environment and we are very thankful to Mrs. McConaghy in Clogherinkoe for welcoming us into her school.

Kildare and Carbury stars come to Killina
We were very excited in school today to welcome Aaron O'Neill and Jack Cully from Carbury GAA into our school. Aaron and Jack were valuable members of the victorious Kildare u20 football team that beat Mayo in the All Ireland football final. The two celebrities visited our junior classes for question and answers and some photo opportunities. It was great to see the excitement and enthusiasm amongst our junior students. Aaron and Jack were then welcomed into a Q & A session with our 3rd to 6th class children. They talked to the students about their football adventures and hopefully inspired our students to follow in their footsteps. They were then met with an onslaught of interesting and intelligent questions from our boys and girls. It really was a fantastic morning in our school and we are very thankful to Jack and Aaron for giving up their time to come talk to us. Well done on your Leinster and All Ireland successes!
Buddy Reading Kicks Off!
We started our school buddy reading programme today and all of the boys and girls really stepped up to the mark. For buddy reading, students in senior classes are paired with junior school students and they read stories or listen to their buddies reading to them. It is a fantastic initiative and every student benefits greatly from engaging in it. Check out these lovely photos that show Buddy Reading in action in our school. We look forward to more of the same.

Great job everyone.
Halloween Masks
3rd and 4th have just finished off their Halloween masks. They made these using Paper Maché (water, flour and salt). Aside from it being a very messy endeavour, it was great fun making the masks. Some great detail was added to the masks. Well done everyone.
Maths Week 2018
Our students have been busy celebrating success in Maths this week. Every child has been encouraged to turn on his/her 'Maths Eyes' and this has created lots of interesting discussions around our school. Our Infants have been busy exploring shape and have enjoyed making drawings and images using 2D shapes. First to Sixth class have been doing Maths Scavenger Hunts around the school and have been reporting some of their findings using 'Scoompa', a slideshow app that has all the students talking! Third and Fourth class are busy using their mathematical skills to survey our students on a number of interesting topics. They will be reporting all of their findings early next week! It is great to see our students enjoying using Maths around the school. The following websites can be used at home to continue the development of your childs' mathematical skills:
Natural Skeletons
Our students have been busy learning about the function of the human skeleton. They have learned the names of the different bones in the human body and have even learned some fancy scientific names too. Some new words include: femur, patella, tibia, fibula, sternum, pelvis and skull. After they learned the different bones, the children were given the task to work in groups to make 'Natural Skeletons' using twigs (or branches in some cases!!), leaves and stones. Check out some of their creations. Well done everyone.
Absorption in First and Second Class
First and Second class was a hive of activity this week. The boys and girls have been trying out their scientific investigation skills. They predicted, tested and analysed an experiment which explored the absorption capabilities of different materials. Aside from being scientists, they also demonstrated how well they can work as a team. Well done boys and girls, great work as always!
5th and 6th Class Projects
The boys and girls in fifth and sixth have been busy working on their history projects. They did a fantastic job researching and compiling their information. When completed, they presented them to other classes in the school. To make sure the audience was paying attention, they had post-presentation quizzes too. Well done 5th and 6th - great job as always!
Ireland Versus Denmark
Some of our students went to watch Ireland play against Denmark in the Nation's League at the weekend. Whilst the result was an unexciting scoreless draw, the children still had a great time in the Aviva. Hopefully the boys in Green can up their game for the Wales match on Tuesday!
Science Workshop
As a result of our school winning the county title for the WEEE Battery Collection our 1st to 4th class pupils were treated to a science workshop from 'Anyone4Science'. The children learned about acids, bases and neutral liquids whilst also exploring different ways of creating reactions. Great fun was had by all even though Mr. Tyrrell's room now smells like a chip-shop (Vinegar was widely used in the experiments!).
Monster Mash in 5th and 6th
Killina National School is not for the faint-hearted at the moment! Our Senior students have been busy making their amazing 'Monsters' using a wide range of recyclable materials. The work and effort that went into these was remarkable and the finished products are testament to the childrens' great work. These monsters are now positioned around our school and we encourage everyone to come into the school to take a look at them.
Maths Eyes around our school
3rd and 4th class have been busy learning all about 2D shapes this week. 3rd class revised the shapes they covered in 2nd class and also learned about a hexagon, an oval, a semi-circle and discovered what is meant by parallel lines. 4th class learned lots of new facts about 2D shapes and explored the following new shapes - parallelogram, rhombus, pentagon and octagon. They also learned about three different types of triangle - equilateral, isosceles and scalene. This week they also had to distinguish between obtuse, acute and right angles. It has been a busy week but they enjoyed making slideshows of their shape hunt around the school.

Daniel's Guinness World Record
One of our students, Daniel Kane was part of the very special Guinness World Record success in Croke Park on September 30th. All of the details can be found here. Daniel wrote a super account of his experience for everyone to read.
"My club, Coill Dubh got an invitation to be part of a World Record attempt for the largest hurling lesson. They accepted the challenge and organised a bus to Croke Park. When we arrived, we sat and listened to some music. We waited for instruction. All the clubs poured onto the pitch. Then we did some warm-ups. Over the intercom we were given drills to complete, for example jab lifts, roll lifts, one hand jab lift and one hand roll lift.
After the drills, we sat in the stand and got some food. We then lined up with fierce excitement to hear if we had broken the world record. We did! We all jumped for joy. It was getting late so we all went back to the bus. It was 10:15 when we returned home - tired, cold but happy!"

This morning we held a lovely celebratory assembly to mark the excellent work from September. We presented our September Babies with birthday certicates. We introduced our "Fit Squad", PE Monitors" and Green Squad to the school. Mrs O Sullivan and Ms. Dalton talked to the boys and girls about the exciting plans for Active Schools. Mrs. Noonan shared the wonderful news with the children that our school won the County Title for the WEEE battery collection. What a great achievement!! Mrs. Noonan also reminded the children to start collecting clothes for our upcoming clothes collection. We congratulated Karl and Mia on their super Karate achievements and the assembly finished off with a song/poem from each class. It's great to celebrate all that's wonderful about Killina National School.

Read Karl's report of his amazing achievement in Dusseldorf!
"On Wednesday the 20th of September my sister and I travelled to Dusseldorf in Germany to compete in the World Championships of Kenpo Karate. This year in my category (9-11 years) I won gold in team sparring and a bronze in sparring. This was my second time to compete in the World Championships. I won two golds last year in Portugal."
Well done Karl and Mia! We are very proud of you both. Our school is in safe hands.

Congratulations to our students who won either Perfect or Excellent attendance certificates during our End of Year assembly. A super achievement and we are very proud of you all. I wonder can we give out an even bigger number of these awards next year! We invited Mrs. McGuinness back in for the 'Mrs. McGuinness Quiz' on Wednesday. Children from 3rd to 6th were put into mixed teams and they had a great morning answering questions, a few potential mastermind champions among our scholars! Congratulations to all teams for their hard work, but expecially to the teams who finished in 1st and 2nd place. Well done everyone! We also presented our World Cup winning teams with their winners medals to top off what has been a fantastic few weeks in Killina NS. Well done to all of students for the effort and enthusiasm that they have shown throughout the year. We are very proud of each of you:-)
5th and 6th Class Dramas
The whole school was treated to a wonderful series of dramatic performances by the children in 5th and 6th class. These children have been working on their dramas for six weeks and they did a fantastic job presenting them to the rest of the school. The sound of laughter could have been heard in Derrinturn! What a great bunch of students!! Well done.
World Cup Fun!
The World Cup in Russia doesn’t have a patch on the Killina Academy of Football! Our school World Cup was a great success and every boy and girl had great fun playing football at lunchtime over the last few weeks. We finished up with our World Cup Day on Tuesday and great fun was had by all. The infants showed off their penalty taking skills and put our senior students (goalkeepers) to the test. The 1st and 2nd class world cup final was a top class affair between Brazil and Spain. After two exciting halves of football, the winning team was Brazil. The 3rd to 6th class World Cup final was an exciting affair between Germany and England. After a game of end to end football, the winners were Germany. Well done to all the boys and girls for their participation over the last few weeks.
Charlie Bird came to visit
3rd and 4th class discovered a stray bird wandering around the hallway in our school. They called him 'Charlie' after one of their classmates who recently left our school. They tried to persuade Charlie to go outside but in the end Ms. Dalton had to rescue him and bring him out to his friends in the bushes.
Senior Tour to Lilliput
3rd to 6th Class went on their tour to Lilliput in Co. Westmeath. This was an action-packed tour from start to finish. The boys and girls were busy doing team-building games, orienteering, kayaking, bog-hopping, rock climbing and lots lots more. On the way home, they stopped off in Applegreen to get some food and treats (because they were so good all day). We know there were lots of tired little children going home after this adventure :-)
Garda Rónan came to visit the Infants
What an exciting morning in our Infant classroom. Garda Rónan from Naas Traffic Corps came in to talk with the boys and girls about the work of Gardaí. He was asked lots and lots of questions but said that the children were absolutely brilliant! Great job :-) They even got to try on a Garda uniform, put on handcuffs, sit inside the Garda van AND turn on the siren.

Junior and Senior Infants went on their school tour to Wallaby Woods in Donadea. The boys and girls had a great day and had lots of fun. We even got an ice-pop when we got back to school (because it was so hot!!) We hope you enjoy looking at our photos :-)
Sports Day
We had an amazing day this year for Sports Day. The sun shone all day long and the boys and girls had a great day. The races were great fun and there was lots of competition throughout the day. Each team tried their best in all of their activities and the group chants were a work of brilliance. Well done to all the boys and girls for their great participation all day. Also, well done to the mammies and daddies for their involvement in the parent's races. It was a fantastic day for our school.
