The Active Squad introduced our boys and girls to another exciting initiative as we strive towards getting our Active Flag. For February and March the children have been set the challenge of skipping to the top of the tallest mountains in Europe. Every skip that the children do counts as one metre of a climb. At the rate the children are skipping they will have reached the summit of the tallest mountains in the world! They really are having a great time! We have a skipping surprise in place for May to reward the children's hard work. Keep an eye on the blog to see how we are getting on. We also encourage families to try this out at home and to see how many mountains you can climb. Best of luck...
In keeping the Active School initiative alive in our school, the Active Squad ran a poster competition. This competition asked the boys and girls to design a poster which promotes the benefits of active living. The children had great fun designing the posters. The winners each received a skipping rope as a prize. They were delighted with the prizes as it means they now have a personal skipping rope for our Skipping initiative for February and March. Well done everyone.
Hurling has started in Killina and the boys and girls from all classes are really enjoying their hurling lessons with Leon (Games Promotion Officer). Children from Junior Infants to sixth class have been practising their striking, dribbling and catching skills. We look forward to the next few weeks of hurling in Killina.
5th and 6th class have been keeping the Active School excitement going in our school. With swimming and athletics taking place in other classes at this time, 5th and 6th have been engaging with the strand 'Games'. They are really enjoying the drills and are working very hard for Gráinne. The joys of getting mucky on the pitch is also a great novelty! Apologies to all the Mammies and Daddies for the dirty tracksuit bottoms!! Check out the moves in some of these photos... They'll be fighting fit for our Six Nations tag rugby blitz in February.
We want to say a very special thank you to one of our parents, Richard O’ Brien, who kindly sourced donations from two companies (Park Developments Group & Cosgrove Electrical Ltd) to allow us to purchase jerseys. Thanks a million Richard and we hope to lift a cup or two wearing these jerseys. Cill an Fheadha abú!!!
The boys and girls from 3rd and 4th took part in a tag rugby blitz in Edenderry Rugby Club. Although the weather wasn't wonderful, they still had a super day representing the yellow and blue of Killina. As always, our children were commended for their excellent manners and super attitude. We brought two teams to the blitz and both teams were put into the same group against schools from Monasteroris, Kilshanroe and Ticknevin. There were good victories for both teams and some close encounters too. The day finished off with a bruising encounter between Killina A and Killina B. Pride of the school was at stake and both teams played out a fantastic game. One of our teams finished in second place overall in the tournament. Both teams had a fantastic morning. Many thanks to Gráinne Vaugh for the help and support that she has given to our school in preparing for this blitz. We would like to encourage our students to give rugby a try with Edenderry and to put some of their new-learned skills to the test. If anybody is interested in playing with Edenderry, they can contact David Sharpe (0871424249) or Gráinne Vaugh (edenderryccro@leinsterrugby.ie). Alternatively, boys and girls are welcome to turn up at training on Wednesdays (7pm) or Saturdays (11am). Once again, well done to everyone for giving it their all today and thanks to Edenderry RFC for their hosting of the blitz.
As part of our whole school plan for PE, all classes are now concentrating on the same strand at the same time. At the moment all classes are doing the PE Strand "Games". The fun, laughter and learning is wonderful to see and we are delighted to see all the boys and girls actively engaging in PE lessons. Junior Infants to Second class are learning a wide range of playground games. These games are great for the development of key skills such as running, throwing, catching and jumping. Third and Fourth class have been doing Tag Rugby with Gráinne (Our Leinster Coach) and they have also been doing Gaelic Football as part of the GAA 5-star programme. Fifth and sixth have been perfecting their soccer skills. We're bound to get a few Irish international players out of this class. They are also doing swimming in Edenderry Swimming Pool at the moment. It's all go in Killina at the moment!
The movement has started! Lunchtime stations are up and running and our Active Teams are busy helping all of our students to get fit and healthy. Each day a different class group participates in fun station activities during small break. Mrs. O' Sullivan has a very clear timetable drawn up for all classes and children have been assigned teams/groups. A timer is set and children have two minutes at each station. Activities this week include throwing, jumping, skipping and much more. All of these activities link in nicely with our PE strand - Games, which all classes are focusing on at the moment.
Mrs. O' Sullivan and Ms. Dalton announced the two squads who will help and lead the activities which we will be doing as part of our Active Flag process. The 'Fit Squad' and 'PE Monitors'have been in serious training with our Active School Coordinators and they have agreed on a big list of roles and responsibilities. We are very lucky to have extremely capable and competent children who will help to promote active living across our school.
Our Fit Squad members are Seán, Andrew, Molly, Aimee, Amy, Saoirse, Aoibheann and Amelia. Our PE Monitor team consists of Alisha, Gemma, Mia, Zoey, Gavin, Mia C., Donnacha and David. Two super teams!! Best of luck and thank you for helping Killina National School as it goes in search of the Active Flag :-) |
