School Activities

Music

Music is an important part of life at St. Oliver Plunkett N.S. Thanks to our partnership with Music Generation, pupils receive high-quality instruction in ukulele, guitar, and violin, nurturing musical skills and a love for performing.
Our school choir performs at a range of school events and sacramental celebrations, contributing to the spiritual and cultural life of our school community.
We are also proud participants in the Peace Proms. All students from 3rd to 6th class take part in this exciting initiative, giving them the opportunity to sing with a live orchestra as part of a large-scale, professional production.

School Sports

At St. Oliver Plunkett N.S., we take great pride in being an active and energetic school. Our pupils benefit from excellent on-site facilities, including a dedicated playground, a spacious playing field, and a large tarmacked yard — all of which support a wide range of physical activities.
We are delighted to offer our students the opportunity to participate in a variety of sports throughout the year, including: Gaelic Football, Soccer, Hurling, Camogie, Rugby, Basketball, Athletics, Cross Country, Skipping, Gymnastics and Swimming. These activities help promote teamwork, resilience, and a lifelong love of sport and movement.

Active Schools

St. Oliver Plunkett N.S. is a proud Active School. As part of our commitment to the Active School Flag initiative, we promote daily physical activity, movement breaks, and a love of sport across all class levels. Our students enjoy an exciting range of physical activities throughout the year, including playground games, daily movement breaks, and regular PE sessions. We also take part in national campaigns such as Active School Week, Run Around Ireland, and Skip Around Europe, which bring energy and fun to the whole school community. With the support of staff, pupils, and families, we are building a culture of movement that supports both physical and mental wellbeing.

Green Schools

At St. Oliver Plunkett N.S., we are proud to be an active Green-Schools community. Environmental awareness and responsibility are at the heart of our Green-Schools programme, and our pupils play a key role in driving real change within the school and beyond. Through our Green-Schools Committee, children help lead initiatives such as recycling, energy conservation, litter reduction, biodiversity projects, and promoting sustainable travel.
These initiatives not only support our journey towards Green Flag awards but also empower our pupils to become environmentally conscious citizens who care deeply about the world around them.

STEM & ICT

At St. Oliver Plunkett N.S., we place a strong emphasis on STEM education — Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths — to nurture curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking.
Our pupils regularly engage in hands-on, open-ended STEM challenges that encourage problem-solving and innovation. From exploring scientific questions to building creative solutions, students are active participants in their own learning.
We also celebrate events like Maths Week, and our use of Chromebooks, tablets, and computers supports digital learning and ensures our pupils are developing essential ICT skills for the future.

Wellbeing

At St. Oliver Plunkett N.S., we are deeply committed to promoting the wellbeing of every child. Our school community works together to create a warm, inclusive, and supportive environment where pupils feel safe, respected, and happy. Wellbeing is woven into daily school life, with a variety of events and initiatives taking place throughout the year. These include the Weaving Well-Being Programme, our Wellbeing Week, and regular mindfulness activities such as meditation, restorative check-ins, and reflective walks and talks.
Each class celebrates a Student of the Month at school assembly, recognising pupils who show kindness, effort, or personal growth. We also take part in the Food Dudes programme, encouraging healthy eating and positive lifestyle habits. Through all of these initiatives, we aim to foster resilience, empathy, and self-confidence in every pupil.
